Earth as a Proxy Exoplanet: Deconstructing and Reconstructing Spectrophotometric Light Curves

چکیده

Point source spectrophotometric ("single-point") light curves of Earth-like planets contain a surprising amount information about the spatial features those worlds. Spatially resolving these is important for assessing time-varying surface and existence an atmosphere, which in turn critical to life on Earth significant determining habitability exoplanets. Given that only celestial body confirmed harbor life, treating it as proxy exoplanet by analyzing time-resolved spectral images provides benchmark search habitable The Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC) Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) such opportunity, with observations ~5000 full-disk sunlit each year at ten wavelengths high temporal frequency. We disk-integrate create single-point decompose them into principal components (PCs). Using machine learning techniques relate PCs six preselected features, we find first fourth curves, contributing ~83.23% curve variability, low clouds, respectively. Surface relevant contrast between land ocean reflectance contained second PC, while individual sub-types are not easily distinguishable (<0.1% total variation). build model systematically altering derive causal relationships PCs. This can serve baseline exoplanets guide wavelength selection sampling strategies future observations.

Terrestrial Exoplanet Light Curves

The phase or orbital light curves of extrasolar terrestrial planets in reflected or emitted light will contain information about their atmospheres and surfaces complementary to data obtained by other techniques such as spectrosopy. We show calculated light curves at optical and thermal infrared wavelengths for a variety of Earth-like and Earth-unlike planets. We also show that large satellites ...

Reconstructing and Deconstructing Dark Energy

The acceleration of the expansion of the universe, ascribed to a dark energy, is one of the most intriguing discoveries in science. In addition to precise, systematics controlled data, clear, robust interpretation of the observations is required to reveal the nature of dark energy. Even for the simplest question: is the data consistent with the cosmological constant? there are important subtlet...

Reconstructing light curves from HXMT imaging observations

The Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (HXMT) is a Chinese space telescope mission. It is scheduled for launch in 2015. The telescope will perform an all-sky survey in hard X-ray band (1 250 keV), a series of deep imaging observations of small sky regions as well as pointed observations. In this work we present a conceptual method to reconstruct light curves from HXMT imaging observation directly,...

Deconstructing (and reconstructing) cell migration.

An overriding objective in cell biology is to be able to relate properties of particular molecular components to cell behavioral functions and even physiology. In the "traditional" mode of molecular cell biology, this objective has been tackled on a molecule-by-molecule basis, and in the "future" mode sometimes termed "functional genomics," it might be attacked in a high-throughput, parallel ma...

Brett Lindenbach: Deconstructing and reconstructing hepatitis C

H epatitis C virus (HCV), discovered almost 20 years ago, was resistant to being researched. Despite multiple attempts, researchers simply could not get this human pathogen to grow in culture. Lindenbach, as a young and enthusiastic graduate student had grand ideas about studying HCV, but fearing a dead-end project for a PhD student, his supervisor advised Lindenbach to work on the more willing...
